Intercessions for Advent Sunday Year A

Eternal God, on this the first Sunday of a new Church year  we sing with joy in anticipation for the coming of God to earth at Christmas.  Help us to sow peace around us, live like Jesus and  pave the way for the King him as he comes to reign as the Prince of Peace, giving people a glimpse of his kingdom.

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Gracious God , hear us today in our words of prayer, in  each hymn and melody we sing, in our silent thoughts and pleas and  may our worship today connect us with heaven and unite our hearts with the sound of eternity.  We thank you for the music all around us, the sounds of life; the lapping of the waves, the roar of the wind, the sound of our Spanish neighbours talking, the purring of a cat and the persisting calls of the birds.

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Loving God  we pray for your church throughout the world, for those people persecuted for their faith, whose songs are freedom songs.  We pray for their safety and ask you to give their praise the strength to convince and convert, the power to ward off war and divisions and the love to bring peace. We especially pray for the peace of Jerusalem as psalm 122 reminded us to do.

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Creator God drive away despair from our politics, revive our dreams of justice and truth, restore our passion for what is good and right. Establish your just and gentle rule throughout the world where there is conflict and where peace has been powerless and violent people hold sway.
We pray for all those who lead our nations of the world and for those in authority, that they may always work for peace and for the good of their people.

Father God, In our daily life, help us never to forget the supremacy of love. May love motivate the way we live our lives in our neighbourhoods throughout the Costa Blanca Chaplaincy helping to heal those situations which so often drag us into despair.

Faithful God, we pray for all who sing a sad song today: the grieving, the lonely, the lost and the bereaved. We pray especially for those who have lost their voice and feel silenced or oppressed. May we bring light into dark places, restore hope and vision to all who struggle, and bring well-being and comfort to all those who suffer.

Almighty God, you sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the Messiah.  Inspire our Chaplains, who are stewards of your truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to you, so that when Christ comes again to be our judge we may stand with confidence before his glory.

Faithful God we pray for your blessing to be upon this congregation, upon the Church throughout the world and upon our Chaplaincy. May your presence be seen vividly in what we do and say each day. Creator God, with axe and winnowing fork you clear a holy space where hurt and destruction have no place, and a little child is King. Clear the trouble spots of our world from hatred and despair and sow seeds of joy and peace so that shoots of hope may spring forth and all people, whatever their creed, race, colour or gender may live together in harmony  with one another.

Father God you enfold those on the margins of society with love and you experienced through Jesus what it was like to be excluded.  Your son befriended the despised like  Zacchaeus; the shunned prostitute; the untouchable lepers and all those who the establishment labelled as sinners.  We ask you to help those at the edges of our communities and give them hope through the patience and encouragement of all of us who claim to be your people.

Merciful God, we remember all whose illness stems from a mental health issue, who often suffer in silence because of stigma and who reach out for help that is often not there because of stretched services. Help us to break through the ignorance that causes stigma and recognise that mental illness is as real as a broken leg or influenza and give them hope through the patience, encouragement.

Everlasting God, as we continue prepare for Christmas, help us to find time in our busy lives for time to be quiet where we can, through prayer and reflection, appreciate the wonder of your love.  As we revisit the story of Jesus’ birth through our Advent worship deepen our joy invigorate our prayers and our praise and help it to challenge the way that we live our lives .

Faithful God may we like Mary worship in such a way that our joy in you grows through the recognition of the countless ways we have benefitted from your blessings throughout our lives and the goodness and mercy that you show to us despite our shortcomings.  Help us to pass on our faith to the next generation of our families that they too  might praise with the same joy that Mary did..

Intercessions for Fourth Sunday of Advent Year A

Everlasting God we come today on the last Sunday of our Advent journey towards Christmas and we give thanks as we remember those journeys that were being taken on that first Christmas 2000 years ago.

Mary and Joseph – travelling by foot to enrol in the Roman census; The Wise Men following the signs in the heavens; The unsuspecting Shepherds moving from pasture to pasture with their flocks; The Jewish Nation, also unsuspecting, moving through history towards a world changing event.

Father God As we think of Mary, pregnant with the Holy child journeying towards motherhood we pray for all women who are expecting a new addition to their families. We also remember that not all pregnancies are wanted and so we pray for all who are carrying unwanted babies and for the decisions they have to make, some of  which may be very unpleasant.

Merciful God, we pray for all who like Mary and Joseph are making long and difficult journeys by foot especially those fleeing from war and terror.  For those trying to escape hardship, drought, famine or persecution.  For those embarking on perilous journeys across the Mediterranean in dreadfully unsuitable craft and for those who are providing rescue services.

Creator God we pray for our world, which like that of the Holy  Land at the time of Jesus’ birth, is facing an incredible change which was to be the basis of the history of the next two millennia.  We pray for Europe as the UK moves closer to Brexit, for the USA as in moves into a completely unknown future under an untried new president and for the future of our world as climate change continues to make itself felt in so many unsettling ways.

Intercessions for Christmas Day Year A

On the first day of Christmas Jesus Christ, God’s gift to us on that first Christmas, was born to Mary and Joseph in the poorest of circumstances.  We pray for the poor of the world many of whom live in conditions far worse than the stable where Jesus began his earthly life.

On the second day of Christmas the Heavenly choir of Angels appeared to the shepherds and sang to the Glory of God; so we give thanks for our church music and those who play and sing God’s praises, not only with Carols, at this joyful time, but week by week in our worship together in Christian churches throughout the world.

On the seventh day of Christmas, The Kings found Jesus and presented their gifts – we give thanks for the season of giving and receiving and for the joy and happiness that it generates.

Everlasting God on this the first day of a New Year we may find ourselves apprehensive for what it might bring.  Reassure us with your loving presence that whatever we might experience in the coming 12 months will not be more than we can bear and that you will never be more than a prayer away from us.

Holy God, , you sent a star to guide the Wise Men to worship your Son Jesus, send your Holy Spirit to guide our Church as we begin a New Year in our Christian life together. Inspire our Church leaders, Justin of Canterbury and Sentamu of York and our Diocesan Bishops Robert and David in all they do for the Anglican Church and for the lead they give to the secular governments in their spheres of influence.

Heavenly Father, we give thanks for this new day and as we gather here this morning to focus on the Baptism of our Lord, let us remember our own Baptisms and our calling to be Christians. May we be filled with such joy as we believe in you that our hearts overflow with love for you and for all who we meet along our journey.

Lord God and Father, help us to understand the mystery of the baptism of your Son. May we walk in your way, live our life for you and be mindful presence day by day.

Intercessions for Epiphany 2 Year A

The feast of Epiphany last week brought the Christmas season to an end.  As we now move on into the Churches year I thought that this poem “Now the Work of Christmas Begins” composed by Howard Thurman, an African-American theologian, educator, and civil rights leader would make an excellent framework for this week’s intercessions.

“When the song of the angels is stilled,

when the star in the sky is gone,

when the kings and princes are home,

when the shepherds are back with the flocks,

then the work of Christmas begins:

to find the lost,

to heal those broken in spirit,

Intercessions for Third Sunday of Epiphany Year A

Almighty God  as we move again through this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, take away all hatred and prejudice and whatever else may hinder us from being united as Christians.  Help us to recognise  there is one Lord, one faith, one church, one God and Father of us all and so unite us in one holy bond of peace, faith and charity.

Almighty God at the Cana wedding Jesus not only demonstrated his miraculous powers but also the abundance of his provision when we ask in faith.  Hear our prayers of intercession and thanksgiving  and show your presence in our daily lives as you make the ordinary very special and the special, extraordinary.

We pray for a world that recognises Jesus as Lord and imagine how changed it would be; free from hatred, violence, poverty and injustice; a place where all would live together in love and harmony.  That would be heaven here on earth.

Father God, forgive us when we waste our lives by being too busy to enjoy your creation. Creator God, refugees continue to flee from crisis throughout the world, and over half of them are children. Lord God we pray for all those who have willingly invested their time and energy in serving the most vulnerable in the world, that they will find opportunities to rest, and will be strengthened for their work.  We also remember aid workers throughout the rest of the world working in places and situations that are no longer newsworthy; give them the encouragement to continue their invaluable contribution of love and care for those people rebuilding their lives after man-made or natural disasters.

Father God, we pray for all those working on the land in the Costa Blanca: in vineyards and olive groves, those producing citrus fruit, almonds and walnuts.  Help them in their labours especially in these times of climate change and enable them all to get a fair price for the tremendously hard work they undertake.  We pray also for the world’s supermarket chains asking that they put the welfare of the farming community before massive profit achieved through exploitation.

We pray for the peoples of the Middle East and for Christian, Muslim and Jew, that they may live alongside one another in mutual respect and harmony.  We pray too for fair shares and fair trade and that the talents of the workers of the world are fairly rewarded.

Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

Father God, we thank you for the gifts, talents and abilities you have given each of us praying that a deeper understanding of those talents can be used and shared within our church, Chaplaincy and the community.  Set us free from the fear that makes us inward looking. Give us a renewed generosity with our time, our talents and our treasure. Give us a renewed concern for those who are struggling in our congregations and our communities. Give us a renewed vision of what it is for us to be your church, in this place, at this time.

Forgiving God, send your healing forgiveness to all who are suffering feelings of guilt, shame or regret. Help to mend broken relationships. Be with all who feel that, through advancing years or failing health, they cannot enjoy life as it used to be. May those who are learning to live a new pattern of life feel that you are walking beside them. We especially pray for the sick and suffering in our Chaplaincy and give you thanks for those who are on the road to recovery.

Intercessions for Christ the King Year A 

We pray to our Everlasting God, through our Saviour Jesus who is both Christ the King and the Son of Man and who understands our needs and the needs of this world.

Holy God, we raise before you your church here in the Costa Blanca, of which your Son is King. We pray that you will draw us together and unite us in the love of Christ that we may proclaim with one voice your justice and righteousness in a broken world.

Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

Loving God, we pray for your world, of which your Son is King. We pray for peace, reconciliation and healing in the places of war, hatred and terrorism. We pray that the nations of this world may be united and subject to the rule of Christ the King, through whom and for whom all things were created.  We pray for earthly Monarchs especially Phillipe VI, King of Spain and Elizabeth our Queen, may their rules be guided and influenced by the example set by your son who lives and reigns as King of Kings.

Father God, we pray for our communities here in the Costa Blanca of which your Son is King. We pray for the communities of our friends and families both here and in the UK, our church and our places of work and study. Help us to know the people around us to be our brothers and sisters in Christ and to serve them as He would serve them.

Loving God, we pray for all those who suffer, among whom your Son is King.  We pray that they will know the presence of your Son alongside them and the power of Christ the King within them bringing peace and healing for them and help and encouragement for those caring for them at this time of need

Faithful God, we give thanks to you for all that you do in our lives.  As the church year comes to an end we commend to you all those for whom we have prayed throughout the year and ask that you continue to use us and our prayers to make a difference in their lives.
