Javea
About the church:
The Ermita del Popul, between Javea Old Town and the village of Jesus Pobre, was built in the 14th century, but fell into disrepair at the time of the Spanish Civil War. Restoration took place in the early 1970s when expats from the UK began to settle here, and were keen to find a church building in which to hold Anglican services. This became the first Anglican congregation to be established on the Costa Blanca in 1972.
In the restoration extensions, the vestry, side chapel and toilet facilities were added, as well as water and electricity, but the original style was not changed and some of the ancient beams still support the roof.
After Sunday services coffee is served and visitors are encouraged to join us. Once a month there is a Wall Market with the opportunity to buy home-made cakes, preserves and novelties outside the church.
Throughout the year there is a variety of social events including:
Bridge Days, Coffee Mornings, Fellowship Lunches, the Springtime BBQ, the Summer Serenade, an Afternoon Tea Party, an Illustrated Talk with buffet lunch, a Quiz with buffet lunch, a pre-Christmas Fair with sherry and mince pies, and the traditional service of Lessons and Carols followed by mince pies and mulled wine. In addition, this autumn we are introducing a Car Treasure Hunt and lunch.
The Roman Catholic Church use the Ermita after us during July & August; and notably on the 1st Sunday after 8th September when there is no Church of England service.
Services: Every Sunday at 9.45am (9.30am July until September 11th inclusive ). Also Wednesday at 10.30am.
