Intercessions for Year A – 2022-2023

Intercessions for Advent Sunday Year A – November 27th  2022

Eternal God, on this the first Sunday of a new Church year  we sing with joy in anticipation for the coming of God to earth at Christmas.  Help us to sow peace around us, live like Jesus and  pave the way for the King him as he comes to reign as the Prince of Peace, giving people a glimpse of his kingdom.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Gracious God , hear us today in our words of prayer, in  each hymn and melody we sing, in our silent thoughts and pleas and  may our worship today connect us with heaven and unite our hearts with the sound of eternity.  We thank you for the music all around us, the sounds of life; the lapping of the waves, the roar of the wind, the sound of our Spanish neighbours talking, the purring of a cat and the persisting calls of the birds.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Loving God  we pray for your church throughout the world, for those people persecuted for their faith, whose songs are freedom songs.  We pray for their safety and ask you to give their praise the strength to convince and convert, the power to ward off war and divisions and the love to bring peace. We especially pray for the peace of Jerusalem as psalm 122 reminded us to do.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Creator God drive away despair from our politics, revive our dreams of justice and truth, restore our passion for what is good and right. Establish your just and gentle rule throughout the world where there is conflict and where peace has been powerless and violent people hold sway.
We pray for all those who lead our nations of the world and for those in authority that they may always work for peace and for the good of their people.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Father God, in our daily life, help us never to forget the supremacy of love. May love motivate the way we live our lives in our neighbourhoods throughout the Costa Blanca Chaplaincy helping to heal those situations which so often drag us into despair.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Faithful God, we pray for all who sing a sad song today: the grieving, the lonely, the lost and the bereaved. We pray especially for those who have lost their voice and feel silenced or oppressed. May we bring light into dark places, restore hope and vision to all who struggle, and bring well-being and comfort to all those who suffer.

Everlasting God, give us ears to hear and minds to understand the message of immortality for the children of your kingdom so that we may look forward with patience and confidence to that time when we will join you in the peace of eternity.  We especially pray for any we know who recently died and are now on that journey to you.

Lord, in your mercy:  hear our prayer

Holy God  during this season of Advent, as we move towards the festivities of Christmas, we pray that peace will flow from all of our actions and interactions this week.

Merciful Father: Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

Intercessions for Second Sunday of Advent Year A – December 4th  2022

Almighty God, you sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the Messiah.  Inspire our Chaplains, who are stewards of your truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to you, so that when Christ comes again to be our judge we may stand with confidence before his glory.

(Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Faithful God we pray for your blessing to be upon this congregation, upon the Church throughout the world and upon our Chaplaincy. May your presence be seen vividly in what we do and say each day. We pray that your joy and your love will flow freely in and through us and that we might never be perfect examples of your love in action.

 (Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Creator God, with axe and winnowing fork you clear a holy space where hurt and destruction have no place, and a little child is King. Clear the trouble spots of our world from hatred and despair and sow seeds of joy and peace so that shoots of hope may spring forth and all people, whatever their creed, race, colour or gender may live together in harmony  with one another.

 (Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Father God you enfold those on the margins of society with love and you experienced through Jesus what it was like to be excluded.  Your son befriended the despised like  Zacchaeus; the shunned prostitute; the untouchable lepers and all those who the establishment labelled as sinners.  We ask you to help those at the edges of our communities and give them hope through the patience and encouragement of all of us who claim to be your people.

(Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Merciful God, we remember all whose illness stems from a mental health issue, who often suffer in silence because of stigma and who reach out for help that is often not there because of stretched services. Help us to break through the ignorance that causes stigma and recognise that mental illness is as real as a broken leg or influenza and give them hope through the patience, encouragement.

Loving God, we pray for those whose hearts have been saddened by the death of someone close and dear to them, for members of our families who have died and whose anniversary we recall. Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Glorious God, source of joy and righteousness, enable us as redeemed and forgiven children evermore to rejoice in singing your praises. May what we have sung and spoken with our lips become strong belief in our hearts and what we believe in our hearts become our way of life, throughout this Advent and in the years to come.

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

Intercessions for Third Sunday of Advent Year A – December 11th 2022

Everlasting God, as we continue prepare for Christmas, help us to find time in our busy lives for time to be quiet where we can, through prayer and reflection, appreciate the wonder of your love.  As we revisit the story of Jesus’ birth through our Advent worship deepen our joy invigorate our prayers and our praise and help it to challenge the way that we live our lives.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Faithful God may we like Mary worship in such a way that our joy in you grows through the recognition of the countless ways we have benefitted from your blessings throughout our lives and the goodness and mercy that you show to us despite our shortcomings.  Help us to pass on our faith to the next generation of our families that they too  might praise with the same joy that Mary did..

 (Short Silence)

Merciful God, we pray for the nations of the world especially where pride interferes with power to produce tyranny, where the divide between rich and poor is beyond imagination and where people have been hungry for so long that many have never experienced a satisfying and sustaining meal.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Father God we pray for those whose children cannot take part in Christmas celebrations because of the expense; those who put themselves seriously into debt attempting to meet expectations; those who may have to use foodbanks for a Christmas meal.  Help us to do all that we can through our prayers and through our giving to the local and international charities that are helping the less fortunate.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful God, we raise before you the sick and the suffering, that you would show the strength of your arm and scatter everything which prevents them from enjoying health and wholeness in body mind and spirit.

(From the Roman Missal)

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

Intercessions for Fourth Sunday of Advent Year A – December 22nd 2019

Everlasting God we come today on the last Sunday of our Advent journey towards Christmas and we give thanks as we remember those journeys that were being taken on that first Christmas 2000 years ago.

Mary and Joseph – travelling by foot to enrol in the Roman census; The Wise Men following the signs in the heavens; The unsuspecting Shepherds moving from pasture to pasture with their flocks; The Jewish Nation, also unsuspecting, moving through history towards a world changing event.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Father God As we think of Mary, pregnant with the Holy child journeying towards motherhood we pray for all women who are expecting a new addition to their families. We also remember that not all pregnancies are wanted and so we pray for all who are carrying unwanted babies and for the decisions they have to make, some of  which may be very unpleasant.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful God, we pray for all who like Mary and Joseph are making long and difficult journeys by foot especially those fleeing from war and terror.  For those trying to escape hardship, drought, famine or persecution.  For those embarking on perilous journeys across the Mediterranean in dreadfully unsuitable craft and for those who are providing rescue services.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Creator God we pray for our world, which like that of the Holy  Land at the time of Jesus’ birth, is facing an incredible change which was to be the basis of the history of the next two millennia.  We pray for Europe as the UK moves closer to Brexit, for the USA as in moves into a completely unknown future under an untried new president and for the future of our world as climate change continues to make itself felt in so many unsettling ways.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Mighty God we pray for the wise men and women of our modern world who are making amazing technological advances and moving our world ever faster into the future.  Help us at all times to use that technology for the good of your creation and let it never get in the way of the way that we live our lives for you and for our neighbours in Christ

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Faithful God we pray for the sick and the suffering especially when having to travel to hospital for treatment or surgery and for those who love them and care for them.

(add names of the recently departed or on Anniversary list)

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Gracious God, who chose the Mary to be the mother of the promised saviour: fill us with your grace, that like Mary we might rejoice in your salvation; send us out to finish our Advent journey filled with love and joy and peace ready to receive that promise afresh into our lives.

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

Intercessions for Christmas Day Year A

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

On the second day of Christmas the Heavenly choir of Angels appeared to the shepherds and sang to the Glory of God; so we give thanks for our church music and those who play and sing God’s praises, not only with Carols, at this joyful time, but week by week in our worship together in Christian churches throughout the world.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

On the tenth day of Christmas, Anna, who had devoted her whole life to prayer and fasting, recognised Jesus as The Redeemer;  so we pray for those who within religious communities across the world fast and pray for the world and for each of us..  In the same spirit we now pray for those who are ill or in need.

(Short Silence)

Intercessions for First Sunday after Christmas – Year A – 1st January 2023

Everlasting God, at the start of a New Year we may find ourselves apprehensive for what it might bring.  Reassure us with your loving presence that whatever we might experience in the coming 12 months will not be more than we can bear and that you will never be more than a prayer away from us.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Holy God we raise before you our Chaplaincy here in the Costa Blanca.  We lay before you our plans, our hopes and the problems that we might face.  Constantly remind us that in our church, results are never measured in terms of winners and losers but in how much our activities glorify your name and bring your son Jesus Christ closer to others.

May we be filled with such joy as we believe in you that our hearts overflow with love for you and for all who we meet along our journey.

Intercessions for Epiphany 2 Year A – January 15th 2023

The feast of Epiphany brings the Christmas season to an end.  As we now move on into the Churches year I thought that this poem “Now the Work of Christmas Begins” composed by Howard Thurman, an African-American theologian, educator, and civil rights leader would make an excellent framework for this week’s intercessions.

The Work of Christmas Begins by Howard Thurman

“When the song of the angels is stilled,

when the star in the sky is gone,

when the kings and princes are home,

when the shepherds are back with the flocks,

then the work of Christmas begins:

to find the lost,

to heal those broken in spirit,

to feed the hungry,

to release the oppressed,

to rebuild the nations,

to bring peace among all peoples,

to make a little music with the heart…

And to radiate the Light of Christ,

every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say.

Then the work of Christmas begins.

And so we pray………….

“find the lost”

Shepherd God, who protects the flock and searches tirelessly for those who wander from the fold, retrieve the lost and bring them home.

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

“heal those broken in spirit”

Loving God, wrap your loving arms around those who are broken hearted, depressed, or feeling that no one cares about them, and fill their hearts with your peace, joy, and love.  We also pray for all those whose lives have been devastated by the pandemic.

 (Short Silence)

(add names of those requesting prayer for sickness, those who have departed this life and the bereaved)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

“to feed the hungry”

Faithful God, we pray for everyone who is hungry today far away or in our local communities.  We pray for those who share this earth with us, but for whom hunger is a crippling, life-threatening danger. We pray for those who have nothing and those who have too little to eat. We give thanks for the generosity of those giving to charity and foodbanks.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

“to release the oppressed”

Almighty God, who has created us in your own image, give us grace to fearlessly fight against evil and never to accept oppression; help us to employ our freedom in the maintenance of justice in our communities and throughout the world.

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

“to rebuild the nations” and “to bring peace among all peoples”

Creator God we pray for those countries that are being torn apart by war and terrorism.  We ask you to bring about changes that would bring peace and restoration, for both populations and cities alike especially in the Ukraine war

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

“to make a little music with the heart”

Father God we especially pray for our own role in doing the true work of Christmas. May we be the ones who radiate the Light of Christ, every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say.

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

Intercession Epiphany 2 -15th  January 2023 – Written by Kath Walker  – Sleights – Whitby UK

In the noise and confusion of life, let us keep peace in our souls. In these few moments of stillness let us bring before God our prayers – asking him for help and guidance as we journey through our earthly life and giving him thanks and praise for our many blessings. Help us in the prayers we are about to offer for ourselves, for your whole church and for all mankind that what we ask may be according to your will.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

We rejoice in the family of the Church. May all who come find love and fellowship. May they find acceptance and friendship. Lord help your Church be an instrument of peace and healing in the world. We pray for all who preach the word and administer the sacraments, that they may find great strength from your presence and we give thanks for the visiting clergy who have ministered to us during this interregnum. May the Church be a place of stillness and refreshment and may people show that you give joy and peace to their lives.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

God of all mercy, we pray for the nations of the world in the unrest and violence of these times. Give wisdom of mind and strength of character to those who are called to positions of leadership; overthrow the purposes and designs of evil people and establish the cause of righteousness in every land. We pray for refugees escaping war, persecution and poverty. We pray for peace in the world; that every nation may seek the way that leads to peace; that human rights and freedoms may everywhere be respected.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for ourselves. Give us this day, the eye that is willing to see the meaning of the ordinary, the familiar, the commonplace. The eye that is willing to see our own faults for what they are; The eye that is willing to see the likeable qualities in those we may not like; The mistake in what we thought was correct; The strength in what we labelled as weakness. And help us to entrust the past to your mercy, the present to your love and the future to your wisdom.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

We pray, Lord, for all sick and dying persons, all who are suffering or in sorrow. And grant to all who are living in error or ignorance or sin, the grace of repentance. We pray for those in our community who are sick or suffering at this time especially those who have asked for our prayers …….. and in silence we remember any known personally to us. In your goodness and mercy, grant them health of body, soundness of mind and peace of heart.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Lord, into your hands we commit those who have run the race and kept the faith – even if that faith was known only to you and now have gone to their reward. We .remember at this time …  May your light shine on them for ever and our lives be richer because of their memory. We pray for those who mourn  the loss of loved ones and in time of mind we remember

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

At this time of Epiphany, we pray that, just as the wise men followed the star to find Jesus the King, we shall also seek his light and follow him.

0 Jesu, while the star of grace

Allures us now to seek thy face,

Let not our slothful hearts refuse

The guidance of that light to use

All glory Jesu be to thee

For this thy glad Epiphany.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your son our saviour,

Jesus Christ, Amen.

Holy God your Son Jesus was wonderfully transfigured in front of his disciples high upon the holy mountain, and at that time he asked them to keep it a secret.  Help us, not to keep the secret but to proclaim it to all that Jesus Christ is Lord.  Give us strength to live the Gospel and to carry our cross in order that the world to come to know him in the same, personal way as we do.

A Litany for Ash Wednesday 22nd February 2023

Merciful Lord, in this season of Lent, help us to aim high as we seek to renew the discipline of our discipleship. May we take up the best and give up the rest, and know your mercy and grace in all things.

From all self-seeking, self-promotion and self-indulgence; from all self-pity, self-glorification and selfishness; from all self-hatred, self-harm and self-destruction,

Good Lord deliver us.

From all that would keep us from joining in worship; from all that would stop us from reading your word; from all that would deter us from coming to you in prayer,

Good Lord deliver us.

From the laziness that would stop us before we begin; from the carelessness that would mean we would do it badly; from the impatience that would mean we wouldn’t finish,

Good Lord deliver us.

From all that would limit our loving of our neighbour; from all that would limit our loving of God; from all that would spoil our attempt to be good,

Good Lord deliver us

By the disciplines of Lent and the encouragement of others; by the fellowship of your church and the exchange of greetings; by the desire of our hearts and the need of our souls,

Good Lord deliver us.

By your agony and trial; by your cross and passion; by your mighty resurrection and glorious ascension,

Good Lord deliver us.

By all that we attempt, strengthened by you; by all that we long for, fed by you; by all that is in us, blessed by you,

Good Lord deliver us.

In every ordinary day of Lent; in every temptation to follow worldly values; in every attempt to justify our compromises,

Good Lord deliver us.

Give us, Lord, the blessings of a holy Lent, true journeying in Holy Week, and a holy and glorious Easter. Give us time to receive your teaching and to amend our lives, give us faith to be open to the graceful filling of your Holy Spirit, and finally give us leave to come to your eternal joy.

All: Holy God, Holy and strong, Holy and immortal, have mercy on us. Amen.

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Creator God, your son Jesus crossed territorial boundaries and ignored social taboos throughout his ministry.  Give us the courage to make a stand in situations where women in particular have suffered because what should be uncovered is covered up, where they have been humiliated and downtrodden and dare not tell and where they have been physically mistreated, and cannot tell.

Intercessions for Mothering Sunday Year A – 19th March 2023

Holy God, you gave us our Mothers, for which we give you joyful thanks.  Today, we especially thank you for all that our mothers gave to us from the moment we were born into this amazing life.  We remember the love and care they surrounded us with through our early years; the guidance they continued to give as we grew to maturity; the support that they continued to give as many of us became parents ourselves and the role they played as grandparents, playing such a vital role in society.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Creator God, as we watch and read the news we see the brokenness of our world and that for many families life is more dangerous than ever before.  We pray for healing among the nations; for food where there is hunger; for freedom where there is oppression; for joy where there is pain; that your love may bring peace to all your children.

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Loving God, we pray for all mothers of children suffering from serious illness, recognising not only their anguish but also the way that their love and determination really makes a big difference to chances of recovery.  We thank you for the many hours our parents spent caring for us when we were ill, and thank you too for the many children who grow up to be their parent’s carers in later life.

Father God, your Son, was born into the human family of Mary and Joseph; bless all those that we live amongst who are parents and all who care for children in our local communities.  Strengthen all families who are living under stress and shine your love into homes where no human love is found.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Loving God, we pray for all mothers of children suffering from serious illness, recognising not only their anguish but also the way that their love and determination really makes a big difference to chances of recovery.  We thank you for the many hours our parents spent caring for us when we were ill and thank you to for the many children who grow up to be their parents carers in later life.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful God, like a mother you gather your people to you as gently as any human mother with her children. Turn the despair that comes through the parting of death into hope and may we through your gentleness find comfort and restoration in our sadness and loss.

Everlasting God, , you alone can see the future and so we pray to you, who can see ahead of us, asking for your protection for each of us, for our families and those who we love.

Intercessions for 5th Sunday of Lent Year A

Holy God, Before raising Lazurus Jesus gave you thanks.  Following his example we now give you thanks for hearing our prayers of intercession even before we pray them.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Gracious God In St. Matthews Gospel Jesus reminds us “that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”  And so we thank you for Jesus’ presence here with us today in this place as we raise our hearts and voices in worship, praise and thanksgiving.

Father God in his dealing with Mary, Martha and Lazarus Jesus showed his love for those friends who had become like family to him.  We thank you for our friends and for the richness and diversity that they bring to our lives.  Help us to return that gift to them whenever we meet and to keep in touch with those who we see less frequently.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Loving God, touch, heal and restore all who are ill.  Open their hearts and their minds to welcome your restoring power so that their sickness ends and your healing begins.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful God, the death of a friend is one of life’s most difficult situations to cope with.  Help us through Jesus’ example to recognise that our tears are natural and bring healing.  Help us also to see that through his sacrifice that first Good Friday death is no longer such a final thing and that we shall meet again in God’s good time.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Everlasting God we thank you for having heard us and, confident that all is safely in your hands, we go back out into the world surrounded by your love and care in all that we do in the coming week.

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

Intercessions for Palm Sunday Year A – 2nd April 2023

Almighty God, as we approach Holy Week hearing again, in its entirety, the story of Christ’s passion, may it help us to truly understand the sacrifice he made for us as we reflect on some aspects of his passion

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

We think of Christ the servant – in the words of St Ignatius.

Holy God, teach us to be generous. Teach us to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that we do your will.

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

We think of Christ at prayer whilst his disciples sleep.

Gracious God we recognise that sometime we put off prayer and thanksgiving as we give way to our human frailty.  We thank you for those who pray and intercede on our behalf both in heaven and here on earth especially for our priests and chaplains and all  members of religious orders who live a prayerful life of poverty, celibacy and obedience.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

We think of Christ betrayed with a kiss and with denials

Almighty God, please help us never to abandon someone in their time of greatest need. Help us to forgive those who have wounded and abandoned us in times of crisis. Cleanse our hearts from bitterness and resentment so that we can be more like Jesus, who was abandoned and betrayed by those closest to him.

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

We think of Christ falsely tried

Merciful God, we pray today for those facing the mockery of a trial, knowing that there is no justice for them and that their sentence might lead to a long term of imprisonment or even death.  We remember too those who languish in jails that are overcrowded or in inhumane conditions and those who await their fate on “death row”

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

We think of Christ tortured and violently executed

Everlasting God, your son was tortured, beaten and humiliated, and sentenced to an agonizing death though he had done no wrong. We pray for all prisoners throughout the world and ask you to be with them in the darkness of their prison cell, in the loneliness of separation from those they love and in their fear in the face of torture, execution and death.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

We think of Christ’s compassion despite the way he received none himself.

Loving God we pray for all who bring comfort, care and healing  as we name before you those who are in need; the sick, the sorrowful, those who have recently died and those who  are bereaved by their passing.

(add names of those requesting prayer; the recently departed or on Anniversary list)

Intercessions for Easter Sunday Year A

Up from the grave he arose; with a mighty triumph o’er his foes; he arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever, with his saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose! (Robert Lowry.)

As the hymns we sing echo the joy we feel today as together we celebrate the glorious resurrection, may our Easter exhilaration continue throughout the rest of our lives and show in the way that we live it out.

(Short Silence)

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Hail the Lord of earth and heaven! Praise to thee by both be given: (Charles Wesley Love’s redeeming work is done.)

We pray for a world that recognises Jesus as Lord and imagine how changed it would be; free from hatred, violence, poverty and injustice; a place where all would live together in love and harmony.  That would be heaven here on earth.

(Short Silence)

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Dying once, he all doth save; where thy victory, O grave?

We pray for families, friends and neighbours who have not yet recognised that Jesus died and rose again for everyone. Help them to see and realise the possibilities that accepting him into their live will bring, not least the promise of life beyond the grave.

(Short Silence)

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vain the stone, the watch, the seal! Christ has burst the gates of hell.

Just as the stone of Christ’s tomb was rolled away so roll away the stones of illness, despair, worry and fear and pour the light and joy of his resurrection into their lives.

(add names of those requesting prayer)

(Short Silence)

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Lives again our victorious King; where, O death, is now thy sting?

Lord, your love reaches beyond the grave to raise your son to a triumphant resurrection.

When we fear our death and the death of those we love: strengthen us in the knowledge that Christ has gone before us to reign with you, crowned with glory and honour. We pray for those departed this life that they too may be raised with Christ

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

Help us to recognise your presence in our modern world, and help us to use more wisely the resources of the earth.

The Lord Jesus built his Church on the apostles.  United with them, in faithfulness to the Gospel’s teaching and way of life, we pray for our individual and communal roles in this Chaplaincy.  We pray for our bishops, that they grow in union with Peter, share the zeal of Paul, and lead us by the grace of the Holy Spirit,

Lord in your Mercy:  Hear our Prayer

Heavenly Father we pray for all who, like the apostles, are persecuted for their faith, and for each of us, that we might be faithful when we are ridiculed or insulted for practising our religion. We pray for the poor and the oppressed, and those who live in war-torn parts of the world.

Lord in your Mercy:  Hear our Prayer

Heavenly Father we pray for the sick and the suffering.  For those undergoing treatments and surgery.  For those convalescing and those who are recovered., that through the intercession of the apostles, that they may all experience the light of the Gospel,

Lord in your Mercy:  Hear our Prayer

Heavenly Father we remember those who have been united to Christ in a death like his and those whose faith is known to you alone, and we pray that they will be united with Christ in his resurrection

Lord in your Mercy:  Hear our Prayer

Heavenly Father we rejoice in the call to belong to the Church, to believe in the Gospel, and to be united with the successors of your Apostles.

Intercessions for Second Sunday after Trinity Year A–18th June 2023

Holy God, St. Mathew reminds us of the privilege of suffering for Christ. We know that to share the work of Christ we have to share the sacrifice of Christ. Help us when Christianity is hard, and teach us to say to ourselves that when we suffer, we are following in the footsteps of Jesus.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Everlasting God, look down with love upon our Church here in the Costa Blanca Chaplaincy as day by day we struggle to be a body worthy of Jesus’ name. We pray especially for the Christian churches who face daily persecution.  Strengthen, comfort and encourage all those who suffer harassment, violence, imprisonment and even death for being followers of Jesus

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Creator God,  we live in a world becoming more secular and less religious every day, help us as Christians to stand up for Jesus against world opinion in the sure knowledge that he stands up for us before you, our Father in heaven.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Father God, at times your son offers us hard choices; to choose sometimes between the closest ties of earth and loyalty to him. Free us from making decisions that are for our comfort or for the approval of others. Help us to understand that good choices don’t always lead to the easiest outcomes.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Gracious God, we pray for the sick and the suffering.  For those undergoing treatments and surgery, for those convalescing and those who are recovered, that through our intercessions they may all experience a full recovery.  As we also pray for those who will not recover, we remember the words of Jesus that “Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.”

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Father God, we pray today for our friends, our families and our Christian community, that united by our common baptism we may always welcome the newcomer, the stranger and all who are vulnerable.  Help us always to follow Jesus’ words and advice on hospitality and generous giving and realise that accepting someone’s help is as good as giving someone help.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful God, We remember before God those who have died and those who are bereaved by their passing.  We give back to you, Lord, those whom you gave to us. Your son taught us that life is eternal and that love cannot die. So death is only a horizon, and a horizon is only the limit of our sight. Open our eyes to see more clearly, and draw us closer to you, so that we may know we are nearer to our loved ones, who are with you.

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Holy God, whenever we start to get offended by your generosity or open-mindedness, give us the grace to repent and join your rejoicing. Guard the Church against self-righteousness and all rules and limits which you would not own, but keep always before us the rule of love.

Creator God, we pray for your world.  Forgive us when we are ungrateful when spiritual blindness prevents us from appreciating the wonder of your creation and the endless cycle of nature.  Forgive us for taking without giving; reaping without sowing.  We pray for the farmers of the world, many of whom still use those methods described by Jesus and we especially pray that they may be treated with fairness for their labours. We especially remember those who work with the land here in the Costa Blanca suffering so badly from climate change.

Intercessions for Seventh Sunday after Trinity Year A – 23rd July 2023

Almighty God, as a church we daily pray that “Your Kingdom Come” but most of the time we so often live in ways that prevent its coming. We spend too much of our time trying to build our own human kingdom, putting ourselves, rather than you, the centre our lives. Send your spirit to remind us that you are “First” and others are “Second” and we are “Third”.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy; hear our prayer

Holy God, we pray for your church especially in our chaplaincy, the clergy and reader, the wardens and officials and all those who serve on church councils. Thank you too for those who provide music, hospitality and flowers; those who assist, serve read and pray.

 (Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Holy God, we pray for your church and ask that it might always provide a solid foundation upon which we can anchor our lives.   We especially pray for Christians who pay a heavy price for their faith; who daily experience hostility, from their governments, employers and neighbours, as a result of their identification with Christ.

(Short Silence)

Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Creator God, you created us to be stewards of your creation but we have chopped down forests, polluted the air, poisoned the rivers and seas, destroyed the places where animals live and then pursued them to extinction. Merciful God we recognise that the work of helping people through life can leave church leaders vulnerable to spiritual attack.  We thank you for our church leaders and pray that they won’t allow criticism or negativity to blunt their ministry; that they will hear encouragement, and that they will always respond in love and forgiveness when difficulties arise.

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Creator God, we pray for our world, where through television, we see the misery and tragedy brought about by wrong choices and brought into our homes day by day. We pray for wisdom and compassion in all negotiations and decisions taken by our world and local leaders; and ask that there be humility in leadership and responsibility for right action shared by all.

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Father God, help us to use our influence and the talents you have given us to bring peace, joy and fun into people’s lives, instead of stirring up strife.  We pray for the thousands of families who come to the Costa Blanca on holiday.  We pray that they would enjoy themselves, and enjoy each other. May their visit bring not only pleasure but restoration and healing into their lives.

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Lord God, when the Church joins together, we can show people a much fuller picture of Jesus and His Kingdom. We pray for your church, and the churches in our local community, and ask that there will be a growing desire to get together and get out. We give you thanks for those who come up with fresh ways of making your name known to the wider community and for those who work so hard to make fellowship and fund-raising events so pleasurable and financially successful.

(Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Creator God, we pray not only for the victims but for the perpetrators of evil and violence in our world; for all governments which run on corruption and fear. We pray for a change of heart and attitude, an awakening to a better way of living, and the courage to reject wrong principles.

(Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Father God, forgive us when we waste our lives by being too busy to enjoy your creation. Teach us how to make spaces in the day to do the things we most enjoy.  Just as you rested from your work, help us to practise the discipline of recreation and help me to become your hands and feet in my street so that my neighbours will one day ask me to tell them more about you.

(Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Loving God, help those we know and love to turn away from habits which are harmful to them. Creator God, refugees continue to flee from crisis throughout the world, and over half of them are children. Lord God we pray for all those who have willingly invested their time and energy in serving the most vulnerable in the world, that they will find opportunities to rest, and will be strengthened for their work.  We also remember aid workers throughout the rest of the world working in places and situations that are no longer newsworthy; give them the encouragement to continue their invaluable contribution of love and care for those people rebuilding their lives after man-made or natural disasters.

(Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Father God, we pray for all those working on the land in the Costa Blanca: in vineyards and olive groves, those producing citrus fruit, almonds and walnuts.  Help them in their labours especially in these times of climate change and enable them all to get a fair price for the tremendously hard work they undertake.  We pray also for the world’s supermarket chains asking that they put the welfare of the farming community before massive profit achieved through exploitation.

May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half truths and superficial relationships, so that we may live deep within our hearts.

May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that we may work for economic justice for all people.

May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, hunger, homelessness and rejection, so that we may reach out our hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless us with enough foolishness to believe that we can make a difference in the world so that we can do what others claim cannot be done.

Let us pray to God, whose saints have witnessed to his glory.

Everlasting God, we pray that your Church, built on the foundation of the saints, will be faithful to the teaching of Christ so that it reflects his likeness.  Lord and Father, as you kindled the flame of your love in the hearts of the saints, give to us the same faith and power of love; that, we may benefit from their unselfish examples.

Creator God, we pray for those who represent us in government both here in Spain and throughout the world.  May they be men and women of integrity, guided by a desire for public service and a love of the truth.  We ask that they also be just and compassionate, so that all peoples may be led in the ways of righteousness and mercy.

(Short Silence)

Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer

Father God,  make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. May we not so much seek to be consoled as to console, not so much to be understood as to understand, not so much to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.

Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer

These Prayers are taken from Churches Together Remembrance Sunday 2005

Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace: for the service men and women who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God;

May God give peace: God give peace

For those who love them in death as in life, offering the distress of our grief and the sadness of our loss;

May God give peace: God give peace

For all members of the armed forces who are in danger this day, remembering family, friends and all who pray for their safe return;

May God give peace: God give peace

For civilian women, children and men whose lives are disfigured by war or terror, calling to mind in penitence the anger and hatreds of humanity;

May God give peace: God give peace

For peace-makers and peace-keepers, who seek to keep this world secure and free;

May God give peace: God give peace

For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, political, military and religious; asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve in the search for reconciliation and peace.

May God give peace: God give peace

O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and forever. Amen.

Creator God, we pray for peace in the world, for understanding between nations, religions and factions and for an end to old scores which remain unsettled. We especially pray for the peoples of the Middle East as the conflict continues and for Christian, Muslim and Jew, that they may live alongside one another in mutual respect and harmony.  We pray too for fair shares and fair trade and that the talents of the workers of the world are fairly rewarded.

Father God, we thank you for the gifts, talents and abilities you have given each of us praying that a deeper understanding of those talents can be used and shared within our church, Chaplaincy and the community.  Set us free from the fear that makes us inward looking. Give us a renewed generosity with our time, our talents and our treasure. Give us a renewed concern for those who are struggling in our congregations and our communities. Give us a renewed vision of what it is for us to be your church, in this place, at this time.

Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

Forgiving God, send your healing forgiveness to all who are suffering feelings of guilt, shame or regret. Help to mend broken relationships. Be with all who feel that, through advancing years or failing health, they cannot enjoy life as it used to be. May those who are learning to live a new pattern of life feel that you are walking beside them. We especially pray for the sick and suffering in our Churches and give you thanks for those who are on the road to recovery.

Merciful God, we remember those who have died and for those who are bereaved. May the light of Christ which eternally shines bring hope to their dark places. We especially pray for those whose anniversary falls at this time.

Gracious God, forgive us when we only turn to you when things trouble us and when we forget to thank you for your blessings and bounty. Help us to recognise all the wonderful things in your world for which we should be grateful and send us out into the coming week ready to show our gratitude in all that we do and say.

Merciful Father: Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

Intercessions for Christ the King Year A – 26th November 2023

We pray to our Everlasting God, through our Saviour Jesus who is both Christ the King and the Son of Man and who understands our needs and the needs of this world.

Holy God, we raise before you your church here in the Costa Blanca, of which your Son is King. We pray that you will draw us together and unite us in the love of Christ that we may proclaim with one voice your justice and righteousness in a broken world.

Loving God, we pray for your world, of which your Son is King. We pray for peace, reconciliation and healing in the places of war, hatred and terrorism. We hold before you the peoples of Ukraine, Russia and Gaza and Israel,

every child and every adult.

We pray that the nations of this world may be united and subject to the rule of Christ the King, through whom and for whom all things were created.  We pray for earthly Monarchs especially Phillipe VI, King of Spain and Charles our King, may their rules be guided and influenced by the example set by your son who lives and reigns as King of Kings.

Father God, we pray for our communities here in the Costa Blanca of which your Son is King. We pray for the communities of our friends and families both here and in the UK, our church and our places of work and study. Help us to know the people around us to be our brothers and sisters in Christ and to serve them as He would serve them.
